Jessie pledged the Zeta Eta chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta in Spring 1999. She was full of energy, an amazing cook, and loved the color pink and platform shoes. On April 22, 2000, she was a passenger in a car hit by a Troy Police car. She valiantly fought for her life, but died tragically on April 26 from complications resulting from the accident. The Chapel and Cultural Center on campus was overflowing at the memorial service held on April 27.

In her memory and honor, the Zeta Eta chapter established an annual scholarship fund which will be awarded to an Alpha Gam from the Zeta Eta chapter. This will be a $750 scholarship awarded each year for the life of the chapter in memory of Jessie Fortier. In one year, the Zeta Eta chapter raised the $12,000 minimum to complete the fund through extraordinary philanthropic efforts and the generous donations from alumnae, friends, and the family of Jessie. Recipients of this scholarship have been Chrissy Legge '02, Sandra Harya '05, and Collene Slawinski '06.

In addition, The Rensselaer Dean of Students Office created an annual award to be given out during the Awards of Excellence ceremony. The Jessie K. Fortier Memorial Award is given to a Greek woman "for upholding the ideals and characteristics that Jessie represented and displaying the qualities of true sisterhood within the Panhellenic Association at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute." Alphagam recipients of this award are Skyla Loomis '03, Monique Sakala '04, Monica Anderson '04, Allison O'Connor '05 and Michaeline Becker '06.
